The Project

Les Castle Paper is a kind of multi-layered fairytale set in a rich and bountiful place ... where a non-specific natural disaster has occured. Few have survived, but those few gradually overcome a monstrous grief by working together to create beauty from whatever is natural.

The Dresses

The real maple leaf dress was initially designed and created for the city of Edmonton's Western Canada Fabrikated Art + Design Competition. Artists, fashion designers, and industrial designers were called to create an original, full-length gown made of any material except fabric. The leaf dress, which won first place in the competition, was noticed in a feature article in the Edmonton Journal  by Nicolette Saina, Producer ImagiNation TV and Film. As a result, I was contracted to recreate the maple leaf dress and two other leaf dress designs for the film screening of Les Castle Papier on location at Aldourie Castle, Scotland.

The Leaves

Three different leaf dress designs were created for the dance scene filmed in the Great Hall of Aldourie Castle. Five thousand real maple leaves and sugar gum leaves were shipped to the castle in advance of my arrival in Scotland for on-site construction of two of the dress designs. The third leaf used was collected on location, vines from the in the surrounding gardens.
